In today’s fast paced international maritime market, oceangoing ships including container ships, tankers, and even cruise ships are feeling the side effects of meeting emergent client schedules and increased transportation demands. Exhaust from these large diesel engines, new and old, emit smog forming oxides of nitrogen (NOx), acid rain forming oxides of sulfur (SOx), greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide (CO₂), along with particulate matter (PM) which can get trapped in the lungs and result in respiratory problems.

Upcoming amendments to the MARPOL Annex VI regulations will reduce the allowable emissions of SOx, NOx, CO₂ and PM from maritime vessels. Each signatory nation of the IMO will have their own enforcement agency to verify compliance when cruising within a controlled Emissions Containment Area (ECA) off their coast as well as when the vessel is "hotelling" while in port.
